Speick Naturkosmetik - since 1928, the company founder Walter Rau's aim has been to make the ingredients of the centuries-old medicinal plant Speick usable for people.

Speick wins the German Sustainability Award

The jury - 16 experts from business, politics, research and civil society - chose Speick Naturkosmetik as 'Germany's most sustainable brand 2013'. This makes Speick Naturkosmetik the first German cosmetics brand ever to be awarded the German Sustainability Award.

The high alpine plant - a real rarity in natural cosmetics

As we know, the more intensively we engage with nature, the more fascinating it becomes. And so it is with the small, inconspicuous Speick plant, which also serves as the company's namesake.

All products, with the exception of the Made by Speick products, exclusively contain the unique extract of the wild-growing, high-alpine Speick plant (lat. Valeriana celtica) - certified as controlled organic wild collection (kbW). Today, it is found almost exclusively in the Nockberge Biosphere Park, in Carinthia (Austria).

There, the conditions for the plant are optimal: low-lime soils in treeless altitudes from about 1800 metres above sea level. In addition, the intense, high alpine light, the clear air and the interplay of cold winters and warm summers give the plant its concentrated root power every year anew. At the same time, the unique composition of its ingredients is very diverse and to this day cannot be produced synthetically.

The unique fragrance fascinates

The graceful, small plant grows to a maximum height of 15 centimetres. The flowers are pale yellow, so the plant does not exactly stand out visually from the colourful alpine flora. However, the characteristic scent is perceptible, especially when the leaves of the plant turn yellow from around the end of August. If you walk across the alpine meadows on a warm late summer day, the plant smells strong and tangy. Even the surrounding soil picks up this unique scent.
